New Community Pubs

Planetary is setting up several new "topical" pubs as part of an ongoing experiment in getting new users connected. If you have ever tried Planetary you know that we have a list of pubs that you can join in the app. This is one of the biggest differences between Planetary and other SSB apps.

Each of these new pubs has a topic it is centered around, along with some hashtags in its description that users are encouraged to use. The topics are:

• gardening
• cooking
• fungi
• floss
• crypto
• poetry

We are also trying some pubs centered on a particular language. Since the current public pub servers on the wiki are all English-dominated, this may make it easier for new users who speak another language to find others using that language. For now we have just three:

• Spanish
• Ukrainain
• Russian

These pubs are not just for Planetary users. They all have invites in their about messages and anyone is welcome to join them. I have added them to the public wiki.

If you are using Planetary these will show up in the "Your Network" tab in the next release, hopefully early next week. If you are using Manyverse I will warn you that it isn't syncing with any of the Planetary pubs right now, or any version of ssb-server that I can find, but I'm trying to work through that in this ticket.

Public pubs don't get a lot of love, but many (most?) of us wouldn't be here without them. Consider hosting one if you have the ability! I know I wouldn't be here if one.butt.nz wasn't open for invitations back in the day. Eventually we'll get true peer-to-peer connections working seamlessly, but until then our social commons needs pub and room operators to grease the wheels of the gossip machine.
