A society’s dominant medium structures how people see and understand the world. In the medium of computing, almost all people are illiterate, a disenfranchised underclass which cannot participate in the shaping of their own world.
this stood out to me -- its interesting to me that a large percentage of folks I talk with about what I work on, still the first question they ask is "what is a server?" ... something they interact with almost everyday in some form, but don't really know what it is
something similar to this is also why I appreciate that Lichen-Markdown is written in PHP and is only 4 php files (+ the markdown parser). The newer version of Lichen was re-written in Forth, which makes sense to some folks in terms of permacomputing, but Forth is also a less popular and somewhat more esoteric language. PHP sort of feels like a popular folk technology to me, in the spectrum, in some ways.
