@kas It depends on the year. Sometimes nothing, sometimes it'll last a couple of months. As we're in the desert. we don't get insane amounts of rain. High winds, and spectacular lightning displays are common. When we do get rain it can look like this

@kas, it's tough, but not harsh, at least in my mind. The Sonoran Desert is the most bio-diverse hot desert, and probably the least harsh of all of the deserts. The monsoon is almost here, and I'm planting tomorrow. But, as folks in cold climates look forward to spring, I'm looking forward to fall. :^)

Re: %udaPJmRzH

Hey, I have a backyard in Arizona, in Tempe. It would have to be a subsurface application as during the summer each drop would evaporate within minutes of hitting the soil. All of my larger plants are planted in wells or use drip irrigation with emitters that are about a foot below the surface so that I can minimize evaporation. You can use the condensate from HVAC systems, even during the driest times, but I've gotten between 4 and 19 litres a day depending on the humidity. This really isn't much when you consider the evaporation pan data for Tempe averaged 189 cm/year between 1953-2005. So you could use the 400 ml of water for established native nurse trees such as mesquite, ironwood or palo verde and start plants underneath them. Mesquite and PV seed pods make a nice low glycemic index flour so that works out well.

Living in the desert, the concern that I have with this system is that the heat capacity of dry air is lower than that of moist air. This would indicate that if a system like this came to be widely used, say in Arizona, that the temperatures would go up. So if the temperature is higher and the air at almost 0% RH, plants, animals and people will be stressed further.

It's not summer, but it is 42 °C as I type this. The average high temperature of >35 °C starts in May and goes until September or October. Personally, I'd rather bulldoze the golf courses and employ other methods of water conservation as well as rainwater harvesting/water banking than risk having the temperature go up. Which is what is being done in Tucson.

When California deregulated electricity at the turn of the century, the price of electricity went up enough that aluminium companies with smelters in other states shut them down to sell Californians their electricity. It would be really ironic if the companies shut down smelters to make money off of Bitcoin mining when the people in "leading" the United States are putting tariffs on aluminium imports.

I'm less worried about access to the highways, than I am about the convulsions that western societies are going to face when all of the truckers are without work. These are well paying jobs for a minimal education. My gut feel is that when that many unskilled people are laid off, it will force down the wages in other fields such as construction, agriculture, security and others. Also, take into consideration what'll happen to those that work in the industries supporting the truckers. Here's an article about automated trucking that I read a couple of years ago that I think does a nice job of analyzing it.

I also have a feeling that these will come into fashion again.

Evaporative cooling isn't really effective when the dew point is above 13°C, I tend to switch over AC when it reaches 7°C, as it begins to feel muggy in the house. In the Phoenix metro area you can use evap coolers from mid March to mid June and then again from mid September to the end of November. We have to change to AC in the middle of summer due to the Arizona monsoon season.

@Dominic I have been told by our police that this is occurring across the West Coast and the Sun Belt (US). Anywhere that there are a large number of bikes in a small area as well as large number of people that need quick cash. Bikes also have the unfortunate characteristic that the stolen item is also the getaway vehicle. The thief is not running away from the scene of the crime, they're just another person on a bike. I live about a mile from Arizona State University in Tempe and the area around ASU in downtown Phoenix as well as near the U of A in Tucson are the in the same boat. I ride a folding bike for this reason, since I can take it in with me everywhere I go: doctor's offices, restaurants, grocery stores, aircraft overheads.

We've been flooded dockless rental bikes in the last few months and I'm waiting to see how that affects the situation.

Re: %U2vDa/7E6

The risk depends on where you park the bike. I live close to a large university and bike theft is rampant enough that the local police have bait bikes to deter theft. A few miles away people leave their bikes unchained on their porches. My favorite methods to reduce the risk of parts theft are by supergluing ball bearings in the socket head bolts, use a bit of bike chain covered in inner tube to secure the saddle. I also use anti-theft skewers to protect the wheels. You can also purchase proprietary component locks.

When parking choose something that is secured to the ground and cannot be unbolted. Try not to use trees as they can be cut down, and it is really sad to loose your bike and a tree. If you see tape on a bike rack, remove it to see whether the rack has been cut in preparation for a theft. Make sure that both wheels, as well as the frame are secured. Make sure that you have the most robust lock that you can afford and then park near most weakly protected bike. The thieves tend to take the path of least resistance. If you come back to your bike and find that tires have been slashed, take the bike home. This is a tactic that allows the thieves to steal your bike at their leisure.

Here's what Sheldon has to say on the subject: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/lock-strategy.html

At the shop, we partially inflate the tube prior to putting it into the tire. That gives the tube a bit of shape when you're working with it and keeps it from getting pinched, twisted, or generally flopping around. But not so much pressure that it hampers seating the tire on the rim. "Just enough" is a technical term and unit of measure in the bike shop. :grinning:

Re: %j7Eqel6rs

Have the punctures been in the bit of the tube that is in contact the tire, or the bit that is in contact with the rim?
Here are some general tips.
I carry a cotton ball in my patch kit. This is used to wipe the inside of the tire, and it will leave a bit of white cotton where the thorn/wire/glass is. It also reduces the chances of getting my fingers sliced by a bit of glass when looking for what caused the puncture.

Aligning the valve stem with the first letter of the manufacturer gives a nice reference point to locate the cause of the puncture.

If the puncture cannot be located, the object may be embedded inside the tire. These can sometimes be found by turning the tire inside out and checking again.

Pinch flats happen because a tire with low pressure hits a curb, rail, or pothole edge. In the southwest US, we call them snakebites as there are two punctures fairly close to each other. These are generally difficult, maybe impossible to repair.

If Defective tubes generally fail at the seams, but are rare.

Always carry a spare tube. Patching a tube at home is a nicer experience than patching it on the road.

@Mark
Re: %AbqKNw7/Q

I think it also encompasses community resilience. Our local community garden utilizes half their space to grow food for our local food bank. The bike co-op teaches bike repair and the use of bikes for transportation to people, a fair number of whom have no home. I will be solarpunking down at Bike Saviours tomorrow. The punk aspect of that, for me, is that I'm giving my skills away to strangers when most of society says I should sell them on the market.

Re: %UmvEjfK+a

I have been disenchanted with commercial social media for quite a while and saw reference to scuttlebutt on solarpunks.net. I've been impressed with the number of practical posts that I've read in last couple of days, something that I'd been seeing less and less of. As for the bikes, since I work on them I have a few:

  • Surly Long Haul Trucker
  • Surly Krampus
  • Gary Fisher/Extracycle
  • Brompton M6R -- my daily rider
  • BOB trailer -- used with the Brompton for cargo

If there is a Bike Co-Op near you, it would be a wonderful place to learn about everything bike related from riding to repairing, and even fabricating them.

Hi,
I'm living in Tempe Arizona and retired from manufacturing and IT. Currently volunteer in the local bike co-op and work on my quite a bit.
