WHERE WE STAND | ISABELLA WHAWHAI WARU
Indigenous storyteller and performance maker Isabella Whāwhai Waru (Ngāti Tukorehe, Te Ati Awa) and their collaborators (Pauline Vetuna, Aїsha Trambas, Ate Cheska, Ebony Howald, Laniyuk and Stacey Lake) share their worlds, stories, rituals and lessons, in their debut feature-length work, Where We Stand. This performance ritual which provoked nation-wide dialogue at its debut VCA's DanceOn Season in 2018, raises urgent interrogations around matters of colonialism, discrimination and privilege.
This year, Where We Stand returns richer, fuller and deeper in its provocations and potential. We ask for your presence. We ask you to listen. We ask, where do you stand?
Image reads:
we stand on sacred, ancient, unceded Indigenous lands.
we stand dispossessed and disenfranchised - the privileged and the oppressed, labourers and beneficiaries.
we stand attempting solidarity, accountability, honesty, love.
we stand among community - strong, willing, listening.
we stand resilient - ready for ritual.
for commitment, acknowledgement, reflection and action, for healing, empowerment, joy and rest, this is where we stand
