One point of clarification :

if you never connect to a pub, any content you post to ssb will remain on your computer, visible only to you.

I think there's an (edge) case where if you get on the same wifi as another scuttler, they will see your first ~100 messages. This is a hack so that they can see at least your initial name / avatar for them (rather than a crypto pub key).

@Fabián Heredia Montiel there's no intermediate party we rely on 100%, so your private messages are like an encrypted message-in-a-bottle set adrift in the sea. Anyone can see it and that you signed the message, but only the recipient can read the content. I think if I had to choose either the recipient being public (like pgp email), or the sender (ssb), I would choose this. Here's an encrypted message I can see a new person sent in case I was unclear :
