To clarify - the next step is not to create a new wallet it's to recover Dan's key for our existing wallet from his seed.

After that the keys we will each have are:

  • alanna
    • alanna's wallet key
    • dan's wallet key
  • peg
    • peg's wallet key
  • mix
    • mix's wallet key

i.e. we will have 4 out of the 5 keys needed to sign transactions for the wallet

From there we will be able to use 4 of the keys to sign a transaction removing out precious $5 or whatever it is. I suggest we just move it to our short term account to speed things up.

Follow all the same steps for setting up the wallet key, except you want to saw you have a SEED to get started with.Then I think you might need to enter the other 4 public seeds which you should have from when we started the wallet initially ( @Kieran here's another thing people are going to lose and it might be good to back up ... maybe this process for multisig wallets actually extends quite far out to where the seed came from ... and the data also relevant to it... like all the other seeds needs. But this could be an advanced case)

Sorry @mix can you clarify a bit, my brain doesn't quite get what you're indicating.

In spite of my coconut death, I REALLY want to participate in this. Finding being coconut dead frustrating. :palm_tree: :skull:

hey @Kieran ^^ this hurdle is exactly what I was flagging. Where to keep copies of cosigner keys. It's part of the resurect recipe in the multi-sig case

@Alanna they're in this private thread: %KkUW5Xg...

I found them in Patchbay by going to /inbox and searching for threads involving peg (he's the person I've had the least PMs with). This narrowed it down to like 6 threads. Found it easily from there.

*cosigner public keys. I think these are safe to share publicly yes? or at least not keep as securely....

I don't have a power crystal. I'm not sure the power crystals I'm looking for exist yet D:

There was some real good interpersonal communication challenges between Alanna and I pairing on this. I think there was more to learn than "married couples need to practive patient communication"! There was something about teaching and learning, about styles of communication - I was bringing my technical debugging mode and I didn't communicate that so I came across controlling and disempowering D:

was there anything else that we learnt @Alanna ?

@Angelica this is so cool, I love it. Its like dark crystal in the light of the sunshine.

@mix @Alanna so the data structures I've scoped will remove the problem of things getting lost in 'unidentified' message threads. Bundled into the idea of a 'contract'. Thanks for flagging, it does raise this is a sorting/search problem from both perspectives (i.e. the one who shards, and the recipient of the shard).

@Angelica : "Also, cc @Alanna, did y'all chose this language for yourselves or is it already part of the cryptocurrency norm? (Is this even cryptocurrency??)"

I'm going to try and answer this below!

@Alanna : "I've start regrowing the 4of5 wallet"

I have not seen the notion of 'growing' a wallet outside of mmt. 4of5 is referring to the number of signatories needed to make a payment. This is a common corporate permissions and control mechanism which is also pretty common within bank accounts for organisations (and sometimes couples?).

alanna: "from the seed generated from Dan's shards that we recombined"

Seed here is a pretty common mechanism used in the cryptocurrency world. I think it is also common outside the world of cryptocurrencies. I am glad someone in the world thought to think about it this way as it opens a world of possibilities imaginatively!

alanna: "It's given me a master public key"

A master public key is from the cryptocurrency world. (it has it's origins in public-private key cryptography which has been around since the late 80s/early 90s - PGP is an example of this... and in some schemas it is possible to have a master signing key and then children keys).

alanna: "and is asking for co-signer keys now."

co-signer keys is a crypto thing

alanna: "Do we want to go all the way through with recreating the wallet, meaning you'll each need to set it up and generate your co-signer keys?"

All of the above words are from crypto/currency linguo.

alanna: "And is a master public key a secret (ie. we'd need to do that via private messages)?"

this notion of secrets is actually deeply embedded in the structures of computing... think passwords, SSL, encryption... it's a profound topic.

alanna: " I thought we we re-growing the original wallet, but are we actually creating a new one that will inherit the contents of the old one?"

A mix of new and old...

alanna: "OK after talking with @mix I am now clear on what I need to do next: re-enter the co-signer keys we used last time (including mine, Alanna's, since now I'm playing zombie Dan). So the result will be the same 4of5 wallet, and we'll have the 4 co-signers we need: Alanna, Peg, Mix, and Alanna operating zombie Dan like a meat puppet."

Dan the zombie being orchestrated like a meat puppet is all alanna's work :smiley:

I personally think of this more like I am a :sailboat: :skull: who has passed on, but I have left treasure maps with my fellow buckaneers. I live on in those maps, but am not turned into a zombie meat puppet :D

alanna: "One thing I realised is while I had the experience of regrowing my individual wallet from a seed (in the setup guide), I kind of skipped the experience of regrowing my own multi-sig wallet from a seed before attempting to regrow someone else's multi-sig from shards. I think if I had done that intermediary step I would have been able to correctly guess the next step in recreating Dan's wallet easier. "

alannas reasoning of re-growing is intuitive and has not been 'created' by mmt, but seems to be an intuitive progression of the fact that the recovery mechanism developed are based around the notion of seeds

meta comment

One of the primary gambits of mmt is that it is possible to wrap a social collectively oriented wrapper around bitcoin

bitcoin (like so many technologies before it) come from the ethics of individualism (libertarianism). trust no one but yourself. as such much of the social language we are conceiving is not intuitively derived from concepts of cooperation (or lack thereof) from within the cryptocurrency world.

we need new stories, concepts and imaginaries. that's what we're working on :smiley:

WOOHOO!

Great work :grinning:

This shows that as a baseline, we already have something viable.

@Alanna : "The combination of Angelica's image and the point about so many confusing names made me think about how cool it would be if our crypto tool used a visual language to identify all these things, and perhaps integrated an extended metaphor/story in its design. Power crystals, secret keys, combining special objects to unlock something.... lots of good inspiration in sci-fi and fantasy with parallels."

I 100% agree with this. A visual path with stories will make everything much easier to understand. We're dealing with concepts which have surfaced in scifi and stories and other places, but is a new paradigm for how people might consider their security. Remember a tiny percentage of people manage their passwords with password managers, so this is going to be a cosmic jump from where many people will be starting from...

I'd be interested in us writing out our process once we have ironed it out and then passing this to say 10 artists for them to interpret are mirror back to us through their own medium and lense...

@Dan Hassan you and I talked about the (somewhat distant) idea of mapping your network of secrets, I love tying this into the idea of a Treasure Map.

@Dan Hassan: I personally think of this more like I am a :sailboat: :skull: who has passed on, but I have left treasure maps with my fellow buckaneers. I live on in those maps, but am not turned into a zombie meat puppet :D

@Alanna: The combination of Angelica's image and the point about so many confusing names made me think about how cool it would be if our crypto tool used a visual language to identify all these things, and perhaps integrated an extended metaphor/story in its design. This being a creative visualisation to understand your network of secrets. There's no single 'X' that marks the spot. Ties in to the sci-fi/fantasy world and to imagined anarcho-utopian pirate enclaves ('TAZ' by Hakim Bey a.k.a. Peter Lamborn Wilson)

Nice work reassembling @Alanna! Despite the 7-of-9 curveball I threw...

@dan %sIJIHCAnq0foYe7JpwFOXGkD/8KOayuuDUYq91LVlKQ=.sha256

@Kieran

I am actually imagining each multisig wallet that one is a part of can be logically conceptualised within different frames...

e.g. mmt has about 3 or 4 multisigs now. They are all mmt multisig, but each treasure map to each multisig has slightly different rules, logics, treasures and mappings.

Then there are other multisigs we may be involved in which are not mmt at all. @mix might have a protozoa multisig for example. cryptokitties may have one which @Kieran is involved in, but is not mmt.

I am imagining that there might be different base colours for each 'organisation' (a bit like qubes manages different virtual machines, which helps with each 'identity')

There is so much scope here!

@dan %Vcuwy0vmGWXk/z1ZzZRIu2N2sYpX6PUPmRZeDoH8uX0=.sha256

e.g.

Here is an example of how qubes color codes each domain:

https://www.qubes-os.org/attachment/wiki/QubesScreenshots/r2b2-kde-three-domains-at-work.png

r2b2-kde-three-domains-at-work.png

We could consider each organisation a domain. Perhaps each mmt multisig treasure map would be drawn on a radical fluorescent pink parchment. I imagine protozoa would be some funky oil-on-water-rainbow background color.
