In fact, for private messages, Dominic already wrote a solution for Ticktack. it just needs a better DB than localStorage. I refactored it to make this next step easier: https://github.com/ticktackim/ticktack-workplan/tree/master/unread

But you don't have to do this heavy lifting. We just need a little help figuring out where to inject some message listening...

Related: my reply to mix didn't show up in the client until refreshing. I think it's probably a backlinks index issue (caused by upgrade?). Possibly doesn't happen until patchwork has been running a while.
