Adding attachments using IPFS

ipfs4.gif

Patchfox will detect if the #ipfs daemon is running and add an Attach File using IPFS button to the compose window. This allows you to send links to large files to other hermies without using blobspace on your SSB feed.

masukomi,

I don't have a horse on this race. My choice for IPFS was because:

  • I know more people from IPFS and Protocol Labs than I do from DAT, people I can reach for for help.
  • IPFS is fostering a rich ecosystem with some quite nice startups around it, so it might be around for longer. Besides the fenomenal Beaker, I don't see much in Dat happening.

That being said, I will support Dat as well. I'm just starting with IPFS because it is easier for me.

This sounds so awesome! The blob store always struck me as the kazaa relative ipfs' torrent-like protocol.
I'd love to try this and Firefox on android even lets me install and launch patchfox. Alas, no displaying the secret in manyverse, so no can do :(

@Daan p20 📟 thanks for the kind words, I'm really happy that this feature is considered interesting for people. I can see it becoming a good way to ship files around.

I have a question for you, I haven't marked the add-on as available for Android, it shouldn't appear on the Add-ons portal for mobile. How did you installed it?

I am not targeting mobile with it because running a local accessible sbot on the phone is not something we can really do at the moment.

I just clicked through to the addon store and searched for patchfox. Just like for any other addon really.
I'd been wondering if manyverse really can open the ssb-server normally. But e.g. ssb-patchql in termux also worked without any magic.

I've never seen or heard of IPFS, thanks for pointing me to it @SoapDog!
