Dear scuttlepeers,

How would you feel about

  • pub invite codes by donation
  • pub invite codes for purchase

#scuttlebutt #ssb

@cel I'd be down, and I'd also be down to spend a couple bucks a month funding software maintenance fighting code rot and developing new features and such. I noticed there's an Open Collective page for the SSBC but I'm unclear on whether that's deprecated.

Thanks for feedback. To clarify, I was thinking just one-time for invite code, not subscriptions.

My use-case is probably different from new users looking for pubs: I'd be happy to pay a monthly subscription to a low-volume pub with great uptime, whereas a one-time cost seems like it would have to continue growing to be sustainable. I've unfollowed all pubs because I don't want to replicate people within hops of a pub, but I do enjoy the high uptime and I'd be happy to pay for it.

Totally possible that I'm the only one looking for that sort of thing, but it's a data point.

Could be a small income stream to people who have time to run pubs but maybe could use some funds?

This could be a terrible awful idea, but the first thing that came to my mind was a pub specifically for OpenCollective supporters. The SSBC benefits from the financial suport and a high-uptime pub, and supporters would get access to a rando-free pub. I'm a bit skeptical of this idea, since it sounds like "social centrality as a service", but I'm going to post it anyway because I'm not completely convinced either way.

I think I'm more excited about the idea of buying pubs as a servie (peach-cloud) than donations for pub invites.
mmm, yeah interesting to experiment with - i'd love to know who engages with it, why, and how everyone feels.
If it ends up feeling like a consumer experience then that could introduce bad vibes

Follow up: I implemented pub invite codes for purchase [%OoVDyWk...], integrating payment via PayPal and FairCoin. If someone wants to make a similar thing to work by donation, the code I wrote might be useful towards that.

An Open Collective for a pub [%BgXi42B...] or a pub for the SSBC Open Collective [%GwXPrXV...] I think could be good. Actually, I would like to move forward with one or both of those; will start a new thread.
